FAQ

Do I need prior experience?

Prior experience is not required. We aim to meet folks where they’re at, while encouraging skill development and helping to build confidence on the water. If you would like recommendations for books and/or videos to help you prepare, we are happy to provide suggestions on various topics.

What is included in a guided fishing trip?

Keepsake Outdoors provides all fly fishing gear, tackle, and wading gear (if you choose to rent our boots and waders). We expect you to bring your own water and snacks. For full day trips, we will provide a packed lunch at your request. We love good coffee and enjoy making creek-side coffee to keep you fueled throughout the day!

How should I prepare for my trip?

If you have a fly rod, the best thing you can do is practice your casting before the trip. Cast in your yard at home or at a local park on the grass and get a feel for your setup. Practice accuracy and precision by placing an object (such as a hula hoop) on the grass to use as a target. If you do not yet have gear, reading and watching videos will certainly be helpful.

What should I bring with me for my trip?

Please bring your NYSDEC freshwater fishing license, polarized sunglasses, a brimmed hat, water and snacks for yourself, bug spray, and sunscreen. Weather can change in an instant — so bring a warm/waterproof layer and  extra dry clothes and socks to change into after fishing.

What rivers and streams do you guide on?

We fish a range of streams between NYSDEC’s Regions 3 and 4. The counties we frequent include Sullivan, Ulster, Greene, Columbia, Albany, and Schoharie.

Can you guarantee that I will catch a fish?

While we’d be thrilled to wield the power of such wizardry, we unfortunately cannot guarantee that you will catch fish. Remember - these are wild animals and are often unpredictable. We commit to doing our best to set you up for success on the water, and will coach you along in your pursuit!
